Northern Lights Estate Winery is a fruit winery located on the banks of the Nechako River. BC’s most northern winery, Northern Lights specializes in fruit wines made from berries and tree fruits.
Located only a few minutes out from Downtown Prince George, the winery has worked hard to support the community here in the north. One of the largest events Northern Lights hosts is the “Climb for Cancer”, a fundraiser where hundreds of PG residents come together to climb the PG Cutbanks, located just a few steps down the road from the winery. This activity is open to many fitness levels, and has worked to raise funds for the local Kordyban Lodge. Previous climbs have raised up to $80,000 before COVID-19 put a hiatus on the gatherings.
Northern Lights also works to support the wildlife in the community. In the past, the winery has partnered with the Northern Bear Awareness society to collect apples gathered from around the community and turn it into wine. By gathering these fruits from the trees, the hope is to reduce the amount of bears that venture into residential areas looking for fruits to eat. By reducing the number of attractants to the wildlife, they help to reduce the number of bears that need to be relocated or destroyed due to human endangerment.
The winery has also worked to create a sustainable ecosystem on their grounds, using only pesticides approved for organic farming in case of pest and disease control, and working to keep the soil of the winery fertile through mulching, biological diversity, & limited water consumption.
The winery looks forward to seeing the return of their Climb for Cancer fundraiser as restrictions lift in the north, resuming their support for Kordyban Lodge.
