AiMHi is an organization that helps to provide support & services to children and adults with developmental disabilities in Prince George and Mackenzie. Whether helping one tie shoelaces or teaching an individual how to cook for the very first time, AiMHi works to help all people feel empowered and valued.
Active in the community since 1957, this organization has continued to work to give their members as many opportunities as possible and help them to “AiMHi” in their own lives.
AiMHi’s services include “Community Options” – a skill development program that teaches skills through community oriented activities like purchasing goods, socializing, making choices, accessing various agencies, and developing friendships.
Other services include an Infant Development Program, exercise activities, employment services, kitchen training programs, life skill programs, AiMHi Residence & home sharing services, skill building resources, the Snoezelen Room, and more.
The Snoezelen room has been closed over the COVID-19 pandemic, but in normal times it is a room that works to help individuals with AiMHi relax & experience a multi-sensory environment in a safe & non-threatening way. Participants experience self-control, autonomous discovery and exploration—achievements that overcome inhibitions, enhance self-esteem and reduce tension. Free from the expectations of others—and far away from the pressures of directed care—they can recuperate and unwind.
Prior to the pandemic, AiMHi participated in many events for Prince George that would work to help their members to integrate & interact with the community. These events have included a haunted house, participation in the Big Brothers Big Sisters “Big Squeeze” lemonade event, pancake breakfasts, and group outings to PG Cougars games.
AiMHi continues to offer their support services for organization members, and looks forward to getting back out into the community more & more in the coming months.
AiMHi is located at 950 Kerry Street in Prince George, BC.
