The neighborhood grocery store is a relic of the past in most cities but here in Prince George, it is alive and well at PGI market on fifth.
Freshly baked bread and deli meats right in your neighborhood. That has been a way of life for people living just off 5th avenue and Harper street for decades.
“So the store has been here for about 40 years. And it’s always been family owned and operated. Our current owner got it from her parents and they bought it from the people that they were working for before them. So it’s been family owned and operated and local the entire time,” said Matthew Sarabyn, Manager at PGI Market on 5th.
That family culture has really worked its way into every part of PGI.
“It kind of brings in that family feeling. Everybody. Regular customers, they always feel like they’re part of the family. We treat them that way and it just gives that mentality. And everybody likes being here. It’s a fun atmosphere. It’s just good times for both staff and customers,” said Sarabyn
They sell everything you would expect from a full-size grocery store.
“Here’s a few little odds and ends that we try to keep in that the big stores run out of and we try to get them in so that it’s always here,” said Sarabyn.
But the real treat is the fresh baked goods and full-service deli and ice cream.
“We do a bunch of strudel and pastries and donuts and all that kind of stuff too.During the week and fresh cookies, all that good, tasty stuff. There’s a full on deli for doing cold cuts and meats and cheeses and all that stuff,” said Sarabyn.
But all that hard work is worth it when they get feedback from the customers.
“It’s always great to hear that, like having customers speak out to us that they really like it and they love our product and they like the environment and the staff is friendly and it’s always great to hear. There’s nothing that makes us happier than hearing that the customers appreciate the work that we put in and they like the product that we have that it makes us if it makes us feel great,” said Sarabyn.
