The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced several significant updates to the rules for the 98th Academy Awards, aiming to enhance fairness, inclusivity, and recognition of creative contributions.
One of the most notable changes is the requirement for Academy members to watch all nominated films in a category before casting their votes. This rule applies to all 24 competitive categories and is intended to ensure informed voting. Previously, members were only encouraged, not mandated, to view the nominated films.
Some voters have found a way around this new rule by just hitting play and leaving the room or opening it on a new tab and muting it. The Academy doesn’t even know if you’re there watching it.
