The Canadian Football League (CFL) has unveiled a bold, two-phase plan to reshape the game starting in 2026, with further changes rolling out in 2027. The initiative, led by Commissioner Stewart Johnston, aims to enhance entertainment value, increase scoring, and streamline gameplay—all while retaining the core elements that make Canadian football unique
2026 Rule Changes
- Rouge Modification Teams will no longer earn a single point (rouge) for missed field goals, punts, or kickoffs that sail through the end zone untouched.
- A single point will still be awarded if the returner fields the ball in the end zone and is tackled or kneels without advancing it.
- Automatic 35-Second Play Clock A new play clock will begin immediately after a play ends, replacing the current system that waits for officials to reset the field. This change is expected to improve game flow and reduce downtime.
- Opposite Sideline Benches Team benches will be moved to opposite sides of the field to facilitate faster substitutions and reduce delays.
2027 Field Modifications
- Field Length Reduction The field will shrink from 110 yards to 100 yards, aligning more closely with NFL dimensions while maintaining the CFL’s wider field (65 yards vs. NFL’s 53 yards).
- End Zone Adjustment End zones will be shortened from 20 yards to 15 yards, allowing for more consistent stadium configurations and tighter red-zone play.
- Goalpost Relocation Goalposts will be moved from the goal line to the back of the end zone, opening up the middle of the field for passing plays and reducing reliance on field goals
